Runners & Attachments

Runners provide the edge to which the outer edges of a fabric panel are attached and held in place. Their layout must form a closed linear configuration to accommodate the unbroken line of edges that run around the sides of panel. Though the weight of the fabric is negligible, runners in environmental installations should be strong enough not only to hold their shape when affixed to a stable surface, but also bear at points a torque (approximately up to 20 lb.) while the fabric is being stretched. Floor to ceiling posts of wood or cardboard tubing were used where a vertical surface was not available.

Each installation is a separate event, and the method of attaching the fabric depends on how the installation is to be used. 2 x 1 furring strips & edges of shaped plywood were used in temporary installations, and in more permanent installations the fabric was fastened on the floors to metal angles with Velcro tape fixed to them. Hung ceilings require special brackets. To facilitate installation and panel maintenance, the size of panels were taken into consideration. Separate panels where interconnected either by a wooden post placed between them, or taped side to side with Velcro tape. In the Spectral Passage, fabric tunnels stretched between the structures where attached panel to panel by using rope (see Finishes).
