Blue Shade 1978

Projects for Public Spaces Inc. in New York City obtained a grant from the National Parks Service to build a shade structure at the beach in Jacob Riis National Park, Brooklyn, NY. I was asked to design and install the structure. The fabric shade consisted of two sandwiched panels stretched on cables between two buildings, the panels measuring 40'x40' each, unstretched. Prior to cutting, the fabric was dyed blue. To restrain the panels from flapping, they were doubled, strings threaded through grommets and held in place by clear lucite beads at the ends, controlling the movement of the membranes.
