The Live-in-Environment 1971

The environment was built on a parlor floor of a brownstone house in New York City. The intent was to abolish the 90 degree angle and create an environment that would capture the changes in daylight, provide variations in terrain, and introduce the unexpectedness of views found in nature without simulating nature. It occupied a floor area of 750 sq.ft. with ceilings 12' high, and consisted of seven spaces: a greenery, sensory, group shelter (rug by Urban Jupena), passageway, eating area, sleeping bower (cover knit of yak hair by Silvia Heyden), & writing area. The fabric panels were stapled to shaped plywood edges or 2x1 furring runners, the staples covered with lattice strips. The artist lived in the environment for over a year.
