The NEA Project 1983-84

The NEA Fellowship grant ($25,000), enabled me to continue the exploration of tension dynamics in fabric membranes begun at the Philadelphia College of Textile & Science (see Art-in-Science I, l977).The objective was: (1) to enlarge some of the patterns developed in Philadelphia, (2) harden the fabric to make the structures self-supporting, and (3) find a finish for the hardened surfaces. Working with two assistants in a rented studio, we produced 21 hardened shells ranging from 18" to 108" high. The shells were hardened with commercial resins, then coated with a shellack-based wall primer, and painted or sprayed with acrylic household paints.
