Suspended Gothic 1979

The Department of Art at Georgia State University invited me to design a suspended sculpture in Colony Square, Atlanta. The plan of a Gothic ceiling was used as a cutting pattern for a membrane stretched in a 16ft. diameter ring. To simulated the ceiling's effect, some points were attached to ropes which suspended the structure from the skyframe, and tension was introduced by hanging weights (1 lb. lead sinkers ) at points where seams converged.

A long-standing dream: to build a translucent Gothic cathedral inside a glass hangar.
